Manufacturing Engineer, Machining (Raptor Tube Shop)
at SpaceX
Hawthorne, CA, United States
SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
MANUFACTURING ENGINEER, MACHINING (RAPTOR TUBE SHOP)
As a Manufacturing Engineer for machining operations in Raptor Tube Shop you will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology. You will work on components for the Raptor program with the objective of making access to space feasible for the masses and ultimately extending humanity’s reach beyond the earth. You will own the relationship between our engineering and production teams. You will provide input into the design and development of new and existing hardware and take a lead role in manufacturing and integration within production on our next generation vehicle engines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, develop, and facilitate installation of an advanced, high volume machining work center to produce end components and couplings for Raptor’s tube assemblies, and to meet the schedule demands for Raptor and Starship programs
Optimize site layout for machining and piece part operations, with large focus on material flow, facilities and operational efficiency
Think creatively; question the status quo; challenge engineering and manufacturing requirements to drive efficient production of machined components on schedule through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers (design, build, and reliability), internal production teams, facilities teams, and external vendors
Work with design engineering teams to develop design and manufacturing standards that significantly reduce shop burden and part cost compared to internal or external performance. Implement a sustainable and lasting system of reasonable and powerful requirements
Resolve manufacturing issues, disposition nonconforming parts, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust corrective actions
Facilitate day-to-day production of CNC machined components with a focus on statistical process control and implementation within machining production
Leverage machining knowledge to streamline and improve upon existing machining standards to minimize cost while improving quality and efficiency of the product. Work along-side various automation teams and integrators to design future-state machining strategies and assets
Implement standard practices, troubleshooting guides, and standard repair procedures, including review and approval of planning documents
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
1+ years of professional experience in a manufacturing role
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
2+ years of experience with CNC machines
Understanding of concepts and demonstrated machining experience
Functional knowledge of machining and machining technology
Experience in high volume machining; experience in extremely tight tolerance applications
Experience taking products through development cycle to full volume production

Able to self-start, identify problems and drive solutions continuously with minimal supervision
Proficient working with SQL, Excel, or similar data analysis software
Experience with designing for manufacturability and assembly
Experience with NX (UG or equivalent) CAD and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) for component and tooling design
Experience in process development, value stream layout, PFMEA, and error proofing
Strong project management skills
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work directly with the hardware on the floor for extended periods of time
Position may require extended hours and weekend work
