Job Summary
Dominion Energy is seeking an Engineer III in the Operations Engineering—Special Studies team within Electric Transmission. The candidate will be part of a team that provides system analysis of the electric transmission network grid through modeling, simulations, and other engineering techniques. Job activities and responsibilities include:
Develop innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions to operational problems and provides solutions to complex engineering problems and issues that may span multiple disciplines within Electric Transmission, as well as other Dominion business units.
Conducts research, development, and demonstration of leading-edge tools, technologies, and applications to maintain Dominion's leadership position in the industry.
Power system modeling: transient oscillations, load flow, transient dynamic simulations, and real time digital simulations.
Analyze multiple infrastructure interdependencies.
Analyze and plan for significant increase in renewable energy on transmission and distribution systems, such as solar and wind energy, and the installation of microgrids throughout both systems.
Perform manufacturer evaluations and support material requisitions as needed.
Support Dominion field organizations in response to equipment emergencies, material, design, and any other issues identified by the field.
Perform root cause analysis of events and implement improvement plans.
Maintain and manage equipment data for transmission assets.
Perform/support evaluation, design, engineering, and support activities related to advanced power systems technologies such as FACTS and HVDC.
Participate/collaborate with trade and industry organizations, benchmarking activities, universities, ISOs/RTOs, and national research labs.
Must be able to meet NERC qualifications.
Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:
At least 5 years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Electrical (or other engineering discipline identified by leadership) Engineering PhD program on its own (if 5+ years in duration) or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry.
Candidate should have strong electrical engineering background; preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
Candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in either an engineering career series.
Knowledge in using specialized power engineering tools, such as PSS/E, PSCAD, RTDS, MATLAB, Ping Things, and openPDC.
Experience with real-time synchrophasor measurements, potential cyber attack vectors, and attack detection methodology.
Proficient at analyzing all aspects of three-phase AC power flow.
Demonstrated resourcefulness in developing system models from diverse and indirect data and information sources preferred.
Demonstrated resourcefulness in development and verification of FACTS device models from design and field data preferred.
Knowledge of programming skills and tools for automation of system studies, such as Python, .NET, C#, etc.
Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles;
Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead;
Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems;
Equally effective working independently or in team environment;
Proven decision making skills;
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks;
Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Must currently have or be pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering with an anticipated graduation date of Spring 2021.
